The problem with formulas

In last Sunday’s sermon (video above), entitled “Formula Living Is Not the Solution,” Dr. Glenn McElhinney told us, well, that formula living is not the solution.
We men might be tempted to say that this is too bad.
We like having a clear path to victory, a plan of attack, and so forth. There is nothing wrong with this. The problem is that some of us try to approach our relationships in a very formulaic, rigid way. We might think that if we take certain actions, we’ll be guaranteed a predictable relational “result.”
Imagine how disastrous it would be, though, if we took this to the extreme. How ridiculous is it to think that in order to have a good marriage, we have to repeat certain phrases, buy certain gifts, and go certain places, all according to a pre-set schedule? It just doesn’t work that way. We know in our hearts that we can’t boil relationships down to a formula (though our wives might appreciate us adding flowers to our relational equations).
Likewise, we need to be careful not to have a formulaic view of our relationship with Jesus. Of course we should spend time with Him in prayer, study His Word, and share His message with others. But it’s the relationship with Jesus that gives life, not some formula of spiritual disciplines that we might come up with.
